The National Marine Park of Alonissos and Northern Sporades is the defining natural landscape of the island. It covers Alonissos together with surrounding islands, islets and extensive protected waters, combining wildlife, archaeology, traditional maritime culture and some of the clearest sea in the Sporades.

What makes the park special

The park was created to protect a large marine ecosystem rather than a single attraction. Its waters support the Mediterranean monk seal Monachus monachus, seabirds, fish and fragile coastal habitats. The experience is therefore as much about observing responsibly as it is about sightseeing.

The islands beyond Alonissos

Peristera, Kyra Panagia, Psathoura, Piperi, Skantzoura and Gioura are among the larger islands within the protected area, together with numerous smaller islets and rocky outcrops. Access rules vary by zone, so always follow current park guidance and your licensed operator’s instructions.

The Peristera shipwreck

One of the park’s most remarkable cultural sites lies underwater near Peristera. The classical-era shipwreck, carrying thousands of amphorae, is open to recreational divers under controlled conditions through authorized diving operations.

How to visit well

  • Choose licensed local boat and diving operators.
  • Keep a respectful distance from seals and other wildlife.
  • Never chase, feed or attempt to photograph animals at close range.
  • Follow restrictions on anchoring, fishing and access to sensitive zones.
  • Carry reusable water bottles and take all waste back with you.

A good first day on the water

For a first visit, choose a full- or half-day excursion with a small number of stops. A slower route gives more time to understand the geography of the archipelago and makes the day feel less like a checklist.
