Alonissos is an island for people who prefer to linger. Its beaches are varied—fine pebbles, pale sand, red cliffs, olive groves and pine forest—but the common thread is remarkably clear water and a landscape that still feels closely tied to nature.
1. Agios Dimitrios — the iconic curve
Agios Dimitrios is one of the island’s most recognizable beaches, shaped in a long, elegant curve. It works well for a long swim day because there is room to spread out and the water stays visually striking from almost every angle.
2. Kokkinokastro — red cliffs and deep colour

Kokkinokastro is one of the island’s most dramatic coastal landscapes. The red-toned cliff gives the bay a completely different character from the greener coves nearby, especially in the softer light later in the day.
3. Leftos Gialos — olive trees by the sea
Leftos Gialos combines clear water with an old olive-grove setting and an easy-going lunch stop. It is a good choice when you want swimming and food without turning the day into a long drive.
4. Chrisi Milia — soft entry and easy summer rhythm
Chrisi Milia is among the island’s better-known beaches and has a gentler feel than some of the rockier coves. It suits families and visitors looking for an easier, more relaxed swimming day.
5–8. Milia, Megalos Mourtias, Mikros Mourtias and Tzortzi Gialos
These four complete a useful first-time beach circuit: Milia for the classic pine-to-sea landscape; Megalos Mourtias for a sheltered feel below the Old Village; Mikros Mourtias for a smaller-scale swim; and Tzortzi Gialos for a greener, more intimate cove.
How to plan the day
- Start early for calmer water and easier parking.
- Choose two beaches rather than trying to visit six.
- Carry water, sun protection and footwear suitable for pebbles.
- Leave no litter and avoid removing stones, shells or plants.
- Check local access and wind conditions before setting out.
Blue Alonissos tip: Pair one morning beach with a long lunch and a second late-afternoon swim. The island feels much better when the schedule stays light.
