Old Alonissos—often simply called Chora—is one of those places that becomes more atmospheric as the day cools. The village sits high above the sea, with stone lanes, restored houses, small shops, terraces and sudden views opening between rooftops.
Arrive before sunset
Give yourself at least an hour before sunset. That is enough time to wander uphill, find a viewpoint and let the village reveal itself without following a strict route.
Walk without a checklist
The pleasure of Chora is in the details: old stonework, blue doors, small courtyards, bougainvillea, cats sleeping in doorways and glimpses of the Aegean. The lanes are compact enough that getting slightly lost is part of the experience.
Dinner after the light changes
Stay after sunset rather than rushing back down. The atmosphere shifts as tables fill, lights come on and the lanes become a social space. Choose a terrace or a quieter side street depending on whether you want views or intimacy.
What to combine with Chora
- A late-afternoon swim at Megalos or Mikros Mourtias.
- A sunset walk around the village edge.
- Local pie, seafood or shared meze for dinner.
- A final slow walk through the lanes before heading back.
Blue Alonissos tip: Wear comfortable shoes. The beauty of the village is in walking it slowly, and some of the lanes are uneven.
